Conceptual art is actually a kind of art movement. According to the basic definition of the artist, this kind of art would use concepts or the ideas to create the work instead of using the materialistic concerns. The work of conceptual art does not confine itself to drawings or paintings.

A lot of people would try to draw realistically. However, conceptual art only thinks about the concepts when the artist tries to draw things. Some of the famous artists in this aspect would just use words to describe their ideas and different people would use different ways to follow the ideas and create the artwork.

Yes, you may actually have received this kind of assignment before. Your teacher in school might have asked you to draw paintings by giving you a certain theme. They may tell you to write something about "the classroom" and you would try to write according to what you think in your mind.

And the result is that different people in the class would have different interpretation to the theme and there would be different styles of paintings. This is actually the implementation of conceptual art in daily life nowadays.

Marcel Duchamp is regarded as the father of conceptual art. He started to create artwork in this aspect with the idea of 'ready-mades'. He was one of the pioneers in turning the ordinary and daily things to artwork. He would not use plenty of interesting or luxurious objects to make the artwork. Instead, he would focus on expressing the ideas in his mind.

But when he first started his creations, he was not successful in gaining recognition from the other artists. The Society of Independent Artists did not accept his artwork. Luckily, more and more artists were persuaded that using concepts to create artwork is a kind of art and the Foundation of Conceptual Art was formed.

In the 1960s, the idea of conceptual art reached its peak in the art world. People would make use of different mediums to create the artwork and more and more audiences in the art world recognized conceptual art and an authentic art movement.

Since then, people have tried to apply the ideas of conceptual art to broader aspects of art apart from drawings or paintings. They used these concepts to create music and films.

Paintings are no longer the exclusive confines of conceptual art. Some dancers nowadays will also use the conceptual art to express their feelings or the theme of the performance. This attracts thousands of people to spend thousands of dollars to pay enter the theatre and view the performance.

Conceptual art is here to stay and is not going away any time soon.
